Talking point: EXFO sells software, equipment and services to mobile network operators, cloud service providers and other clients to test and manage their systems. The firm has 1,900 workers globally, 732 of them in Canada, and has pledged to hire 50 more to secure the SIF award. The new centre will develop AI tools to speed up 5G antenna and fiber-line installation, predict and spot outages, and monitor networks, EXFO spokesperson Shelley Grandy told The Logic. The company is a major exporter, counting the U.S. and China as significant markets. Ottawa’s SIF is underwriting other 5G projects, awarding $66.7 million to consortium ENCQOR in March 2018 and $40 million to Nokia in January 2019.
