Under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), the site—owned by Montreal-founded, Luxembourg-based Aylo, itself owned by Ethical Capital Partners, which has its headquarters in Ottawa—will have to verify the age of its users beginning in April 2024, and will be subject to external auditing and rules about taking down illegal content. Talking point: The likes of Facebook and Wikipedia, among others, already fall under the EU rules, which apply to platforms with more than 45 million users. No adult sites came forward to say they had more than that number of users, leaving it to EU regulators to determine which titles fell within the DSA’s purview. Pornhub had argued it shouldn’t be subject to the DSA, saying it had only 33 million users in the EU’s member countries. The law will also affect adult sites Xvideos and Stripchat, with an official announcement coming Wednesday, the Financial Times reported.
