Quebec’s economy minister stepped down not long after ethics commissioner Ariane Mignolet said he should be suspended because of his business interests in two companies that have solicited Quebec government. Premier François Legault said Fitzgibbon’s resignation was the result of a “mutual agreement” and that he’s hopeful the minister will join cabinet again. (The Logic)
Talking point: Legault has repeatedly rebuffed calls to sanction Fitzgibbon, whose interests in ImmerVision and White Star Capital were the subject of four ethics reports. In an April interview with The Logic, Fitzgibbon downplayed the reports, blaming “the aquarium of politics” for overblowing the affair and calling the ethics commissioner’s office “obsolete.” Fitzgibbon says he will remain an MNA. Finance Minister Éric Girard will take over his duties.
