Talking point: This is the latest step in the development of the Real-Time Rail, a highly anticipated payment system that many in the industry see as a key pillar for modernizing Canada’s financial sector. Payments Canada previously hired Interac as well as Mastercard’s Vocalink to help design the system, which has been delayed repeatedly since the Department of Finance and the Bank of Canada began laying the groundwork for the project in 2015. Hiring TCS to implement the system means Payments Canada could be getting closer to rolling out an initial version, currently expected for mid-2023 or later.
