The Canadian miner said it’s reviewing the ruling and considering its legal rights after Panama’s Supreme Court struck down the law that had approved its Oct. 20 contract with the Panamanian government. (The Logic) 

Talking point: First Quantum may need to pursue alternatives like international arbitration to move forward with the mine, which supplies an estimated one per cent of the world’s copper.  Protesters against the mine have gained support from international figures like Leonardo DiCaprio and Greta Thunberg amid environmental concerns and accusations that First Quantum is not paying enough royalties under the contract. First Quantum’s stock has fallen roughly 11 per cent over the past week during the deliberations. Some analysts have forecasted that the combined issues in Peru and Panama could deplete a global surplus of the metal, which is used for increasingly important applications like electrifying vehicles and updating electric grids.
