Talking point: The announcement follows another 35 per cent cut to Canada’s 2024 target for international study permits earlier this year. Canada’s Immigration department more broadly has trimmed the number of temporary residents it lets into the country, from 6.5 per cent of the total population down to a target of five per cent. While high immigration has helped Canada’s private sector secure talent in a persistently tight labour market, the federal government has nonetheless started paring its aggressive immigration rates over concerns about housing shortages. Increasing numbers of voters support the move.
