Speaking virtually at a University of Waterloo technology conference in Toronto on Wednesday, the CEO of the company behind ChatGPT said his biggest concern around AI is how it will impact elections around the world next year. Specifically, Altman pointed to the potential of AI models’ effectiveness in personalized one-on-one persuasion. “It’s an example of something new I’m worried about because it’s unknown,” he said. Talking point: Altman, who has been outspoken about regulation of the sector, said the impact of deepfakes and misinformation on the election is what he calls a “known challenge” because “we as a society have had to deal with this before.” Earlier at the conference, RBC CEO Dave McKay said he was excited about OpenAI’s ChatGPT model, but “it’s not yet ready for prime time.” McKay expects the technology to increase productivity and lower costs, particularly when it comes to writing code. However, because ChatGPT can still produce a “hallucination,” it’s not ready to use with banking clients, he said.
