Talking point: Sutskever, a Canadian who studied under Geoffrey Hinton, formally departed the ChatGPT maker last month. He’d participated in the short-lived ouster of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, reportedly after disagreements over whether the firm was properly balancing safety with the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a human-like state of the technology. His post Wednesday pointedly noted that the new startup will “approach safety and capabilities in tandem,” and that it’s aiming to develop superintelligence in one shot rather than launching a succession of interim products. Gross’s investments include Keen Technologies, a startup aiming for AGI. Keen was founded by former Oculus CTO John Carmack and is working with Edmonton-based reinforcement-learning grandee Richard Sutton.
