Talking point: The First Nations argue the Ontario and federal governments violated the constitution by giving themselves the power to circumvent their own laws. The First Nations’ lawyer Kate Kempton said they will likely seek an injunction if either government uses the new laws to fast track projects. Several of the Indigenous leaders behind the application still plan to attend a summit with Prime Minister Mark Carney this week to discuss the implementation of Ottawa’s bill. The Privy Council Office extended invitations to chiefs, tribal councils, regional organizations and Assembly of First Nations leaders from across the country to participate.
