Talking point: Critical services, including emergency and transit, are working, but that more than a week after the attack, email still can’t be accessed speaks to how unprepared smaller municipalities and businesses are for this kind of attack. Nineteen per cent of Canadian companies reported being hit by a ransomware attack in a 2018 report—that number is a lot higher for smaller players. Midland and Wasaga Beach, Ont. both suffered ransomware attacks in 2018. Stratford is doing what it can to regain access to its systems, including having staff work throughout the Easter long weekend, but there’s still quite a bit to be done and staff are expecting it to take “days, not hours,” to resolve. The city council meeting scheduled for tonight has been postponed to next Tuesday.
