At a Monday House of Commons ethics committee meeting, Steven Guilbeault signalled that a bill targeting hate and revenge porn will be introduced before the summer break beginning June 23. The bill will cover five areas of harmful online content: child sexual exploitation, terrorism, violence, hate speech and the non-consensual sharing of intimate content. (The Logic)
Talking point: In February, Guilbeault told The Logic that the online-harms legislation will include a new regulator position to oversee the actions of online platforms in the country. It would also have a 24-hour takedown notice, which would give the regulator power to compel platforms to remove material the regulator deems illegal or hateful, or that otherwise fosters radicalization, incites violence or promotes terrorist propaganda. Meanwhile, Liberal and Bloc Québécois MPs voted to close debate on Bill C-10, which seeks to regulate online streaming services.
