The global electric-vehicle industry is slowing battery production by a year to a year-and-a half, a timeline which could also apply to Northvolt’s Montreal-area project, Quebec Innovation Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon wrote on X on Saturday. Fitzgibbon—who is resigning, La Presse reported Tuesday—said that the results of Northvolt’s company-wide strategic review will reveal more in the fall. (The Logic, La Presse)
Talking point: The comments—in response to a La Presse report—cast doubt on whether the startup’s $7-billion Canadian gigafactory will open on schedule. The company announced the strategic review in July. Spokesperson Emmanuelle Rouillard-Moreau said Tuesday that decisions have not been finalized and the work on the Quebec site continues. But, she added, it’s possible the review could cause them to reassess the schedule. That factory is expected to employ up to 3,000 people, and is backed by $1.34 billion in federal funding, $1.37 billion in provincial funding and another $4.6 billion in combined production incentives.
