Talking point: The chip shortage has sidelined car and electronics manufacturers, and companies have pressured politicians to fund local production. Ohio is hoping to come out a winner of the supply-chain crisis, with the potential for 7,000 additional construction jobs and US$100 million in educational partnerships from Intel. While not all manufacturing promises come true, Intel said it would immediately start planning the first two facilities, with construction beginning this year, in hopes that in the next decade they could become one of the world’s largest chip-making sites. Canada’s Semiconductor Council has been advocating for a national strategy to give multinational manufacturers financial incentives to set up domestic production here—or risk the economic consequences of being left out as technology becomes increasingly chip-intensive.
