Talking point: About 20,000 of the no-shows were from India, while China had the second highest number at 4,279. The federal government announced last January that it was reducing international student numbers to 360,000 in 2024, a 35 per cent cut from 2023 levels. The move aimed to ease pressure on housing and health care, and to curb abuse of the system. The government later announced broader immigration cuts.
