Talking point: Its return via the Chinese video-sharing platform that’s helped spur the growth of the “creator economy” officially begins July 7. MuchMusic has already posted a sneak peek with three videos on its new TikTok account, including a quick test of Canadian music knowledge. The relaunch will include a new crop of video jockeys. (Remember, that’s how George Stroumboulopoulos, Jeanne Beker and Rick Campanelli rose to fame.) The same team behind TSN’s BarDown, which has more than 142,000 followers on TikTok, will drive the initiative. MuchMusic first launched in Canada in 1984, but streaming services like YouTube distracted its once-faithful audience. By 2019, Bell Media had reduced the channel to a single hour of retro music videos daily.
