Liberal, NDP and Bloc Québécois members of a House of Commons committee decided Wednesday night to pause an examination of the decisions and contracts behind the ArriveCan border app while the RCMP scrutinizes the contracting process for criminality. Conservatives accused the other parties of a coverup. (The Logic)
Talking point: ArriveCan was intended to speed up border crossings amid COVID-19 restrictions and was a lightning rod before the allegations of contracting impropriety. In the committee meeting, Liberal MP Majid Jowhari said the contents of a preliminary investigative report the committee got from the Canadian Border Services Agency are “scary,” and he’d rather have the results of a police investigation before asking questions. Bloc MP Julie Vignola said the committee can dig into every detail of the procurement in time, but “patience is a virtue.” A broad auditor general’s report on the ArriveCan project is due Monday.
