Talking point: CEO Alain Bédard said last week that legally incorporating as an American company would enable it to be part of U.S. stock indices, but that the move would require shareholder approval. Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, one of its largest shareholders, immediately denounced TFI’s intention to move, despite assurances that the company’s operations would remain unchanged. TFI says it does about 70 per cent of its business south of the border. The company made the quick about-face as Canada faces the likely possibility of a trade war with the U.S., which has inspired a groundswell of Canadian nationalism among businesses and consumers. In an earnings call last week, Bédard expressed optimism about the new Donald Trump administration and said he believes it’s time to invest in the U.S.
