The Big Tech firm that owns Instagram and Facebook said it would allow local news on their feeds if the federal government made the exclusion for Meta, Rachel Curran, the company’s head of public policy for Canada, told a parliamentary committee Wednesday. (The Logic)
Talking point: Meta blocked access to Canadian news on its platforms in August, in response to the Online New Act, which compels Big Tech platforms to pay for news posted to their platforms. “We would love to have news on our platform. The problem is that the government, through the Online News Act, has asked us to pay an uncapped amount, an unknown amount for content that has no commercial value to us,” Curran said. Google and the federal government recently signed a deal that will see the company pay $100 million a year to Canadian news publishers, indexed to inflation.
