Talking point: Zuckerberg’s personal involvement marks an escalation of Facebook’s attempts to push self-regulation before governments impose legislation. Earlier this week, the company announced a new policy on dealing with hate speech and misinformation, and said it will partner with police to prevent the live-streaming of terrorist attacks. With the new policies in place, Zuckerberg is now trying to fend off individual lawmakers who could be significant thorns in his firm’s side. He’s talking to Republican Senator Josh Hawley, who has called for platforms to be more liable for harms their users cause. He’s also meeting with Republican Mike Lee, chairman of the Senate antitrust committee. The Federal Trade Commission is currently investigating Facebook; the Justice Department is potentially launching a probe, as well. Lee has previously suggested one agency alone may be able to do the job.
