Talking point: Gori is retiring at 56 after holding the CEO position for less than a decade. RBC analyst Darko Mihelic said his decision is a surprise, calling it a “young” retirement in a note to clients. Witherington, 47, joined Manulife’s executive leadership team as chief financial officer in 2017, before becoming CEO of Manulife Asia five years later. Growth in Manulife’s Asia business contributed to what CFO Colin Simpson described to BNN Bloomberg as “blowout” earnings in the firm’s asset management business in the third quarter. Witherington told the South China Morning Post Sunday that Manulife is on track to reach its goal of 50 per cent or more of its earnings coming from Asia by 2027. Manulife’s stock closed down 1.6 per cent Monday.
