The Ontario auto-parts maker said Thursday it plans to establish a new 240,000-sq.ft. engineering centre in Bengaluru and hire about 1,000 engineers to support electric vehicles, electronics and software development. (The Logic)

Talking point: The expansion comes after announcing a US$77-million investment last month in the Indian e-scooter and -bike company Yulu, as Magna looks to expand beyond traditional internal-combustion vehicles. The company  has 12 manufacturing divisions and three product-development centres in India, and said it’s prepared to hire another 250 engineers in Bengaluru as it develops new intellectual property. Magna makes car parts for 58 automakers globally, and like many suppliers, it’s mounting an uneasy transition to EV manufacturing. It recently cancelled plans for a $50-million battery-enclosure plant in Chatham, Ont., opting to keep EV-related production in its St. Thomas, Ont. facility due to concerns about a complex new manufacturing process.
