The Tamil Guardian, a news site catering to Tamils both in Sri Lanka and abroad, said its Instagram page was suspended “without any prior warning or explanation,” prompting Liberal MP Gary Anandasangaree to organize an event with fellow Liberal Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Conservative MP Michael Chong, demanding the move be rescinded. Talking point: A spokesperson for Meta, the company that owns Instagram and was formerly known as Facebook, told The Logic the account had “posted multiple pieces of content which praised the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a group that has been designated and banned from our platforms.” In Canada, the Tamil Tigers are also formally listed as a terrorist group. The Liberal government is proposing a law that would require platforms to take down content flagged as hateful or terrorism-promoting within 24 hours of receiving notice it exists, or face multimillion-dollar fines; critics have said that will lead to rampant suppression of political speech. Erskine-Smith said the difference is that the proposed law would come with an appeal pathway, which Instagram doesn’t offer. Meta’s Lisa Laventure said there is an appeal mechanism, which the Tamil Guardian used, and the publication had been notified and directly warned by email.
