Talking point: The documents leaked to Greenpeace U.K.’s investigative-journalism unit ahead of COP26 include tens of thousands of comments on the IPCC draft report to be published next year. Some comments seem to contradict governments’ Paris Agreement commitments. A senior Australian government official, for instance, rejected the widely accepted conclusion that closing coal-fired power plants is necessary to limit warming. Brazil and Argentina, two of the biggest beef and animal-feed producers, urged the UN to delete comments about the environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. “These comments show the tactics some countries are willing to adopt to obstruct and delay action to cut emissions,” climate scientist and professor at University College London Simon Lewis told Unearthed.
