Talking point: Llewellyn is the first woman to lead a major chartered Canadian bank; HSBC Canada and Tangerine are led by women but are divisions of larger banks. She’s taking the top job following a difficult period for the Montreal-based bank. In May, Laurentian cut its dividend by 40 per cent, in a first for a major Canadian bank in nearly 30 years. In June, Laurentian’s then-CEO left the bank, with board chair Michael Mueller saying the bank wanted to “reinvigorate” its plans.
