Talking point: Founded in 2011, Jolt invests in mid-size companies that work to solve complex scientific or technical challenges, and that have intellectual property and annual revenues between $20 million and $40 million. The idea is to grow them into global companies. It has just over US$542 million under management, according to PitchBook data. In Canada, “there is vibrant, state-sponsored technology, with the creation of a lot of intellectual property,” Jolt Capital president Jean Schmitt told The Logic. “But there is very little growth capital.” As a result, Schmitt said, companies are sold off much too early, and don’t benefit the communities where the IP is developed. “For us, as cold-blooded investors, if you grow those companies and you do a good job, you make much more money.”
