In a memo late Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Fidji Simo would report to him as the firm’s new CEO of applications. Simo, who is already on the board of the ChatGPT maker, will remain CEO of Instacart until a replacement is named, and continue to serve as the firm’s chair.(The Logic)
Talking point: Altman said the executive addition frees him to focus on other areas of OpenAI’s operations, including research to advance its AI models, efforts to ensure they’re safe, and the build-out of massive data centres to power them. Simo, who’s also on Shopify’s board, led Instacart through its much-delayed IPO in September 2023. Instacart’s share price dropped as much as 7.3 per cent in Thursday trading. Simo brings experience with consumer applications at massive scale, having also previously run Facebook’s namesake app. The AI firm is growing its product portfolio, powering features for Apple, adding new video and audio models, and developing agents that can do tasks on the internet.
