Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu met with executives from major Indian firms with “deep roots” in Canada, including Jubilant Bhartia Group, Tata and HCLTech. He said Friday that many are looking at the list of infrastructure projects Ottawa wants to fast-track. (The Logic)
Talking point: Sidhu said India would need 70 per cent more energy by 2040 because of its population growth, which lines up with one of several scenarios forecast by the International Energy Agency in 2021. That is why Indian firms are interested in investing in Canada’s “nation-building” projects related to nuclear energy and liquefied natural gas, Sidhu told reporters as he wrapped up a visit to India. Sidhu and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal discussed how to increase co-operation in sectors such as cleantech, aerospace, artificial intelligence and agriculture, but stopped short of relaunching trade talks. Goyal will lead a trade mission to Canada early next year.
