A petition signed by more than 600 employees asks Google to do more to protect consumers “from having their data used against them” around health matters. They’re speaking up after Facebook handed over messages between a Nebraska teen who had an abortion and her mother, which were used to prosecute them. (TechCrunch)
Talking point: The workers also want Google to expand its health benefits to better help employees access abortions following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Meta beefed up its privacy protections recently, testing automatic end-to-end encrypted Messenger chat threads, though it said those changes are not related to the Nebraska case. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, meanwhile, has threatened to sue an Idaho adtech firm, alleging it reveals people’s visits to women’s reproductive health clinics, addiction recovery centres and other sensitive locations. The company, Kochava, has filed a lawsuit against the agency, saying the FTC “wrongfully alleges” that it is violating consumer protection laws.
