Google new subscription-based gaming service will take on traditional industry players like Sony and Microsoft. Talking point: With the success of free-to-play games—such as Epic Games’ smash hit Fortnite—and the rise of mobile gaming—projected to be a US$100-billion industry by 2021—there’s strong demand for cheaper and more accessible gaming options. Google isn’t the only Big Tech company looking to shake up the US$140-billion gaming industry. The search giant is up against tough competition, with Microsoft developing xCloud, a similar service that will launch public trials later this year. Amazon, Apple and traditional gaming hardware companies Nvidia and Sony have cloud-gaming services in the works, as well.
