The search giant is behind “an astroturf group” formed to criticize Microsoft’s cloud licensing practices in Europe, Microsoft deputy general counsel Rima Alaily wrote in a blog post. (The Logic)
Talking point: Google has paid smaller cloud companies to join the Open Cloud Coalition, which advocates for “an open, competitive, and innovative cloud ecosystem” but is actually conspiring against competitors Microsoft and Amazon, Alaily alleged. In September, Google filed a complaint to the European Commission accusing Microsoft of charging customers a 400 per cent markup to run Windows Server on non-Microsoft cloud computing operators. Microsoft itself avoided an EU antitrust investigation in July by paying a US$21.7-million fine.
