The collaboration, announced today at the Alphabet subsidiary’s annual developer conference, will allow Shopify merchants to easily showcase items on platforms including Google Search, YouTube and Google Images. Shopify’s stock closed up 3.25 per cent at $1,365.65 a share. (The Logic)
Talking point: Shopify shares have already been on a tear since the start of the pandemic. Last year, the company added a TikTok feature, allowing its merchants to launch shoppable video ads from Shopify’s app. By joining forces with Google, the company is further ramping up its efforts to compete against Amazon, which increasingly views the Canadian e-commerce company as a threat: Amazon has set up an internal team to copy its platform, and earlier this year acquired Selz, a 35-person company whose product is similar to Shopify’s.
