Talking point: One deal covers the conversion and operation of a San Antonio warehouse as an immigration detention centre and could exceed US$1 billion. A second, worth as much as US$382.3 million, covers armed transportation of ICE detainees in Texas, though ICE suspended it after a rival American contractor challenged the decision. GardaWorld previously provided services to Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility, which faced scrutiny over detainee conditions. GardaWorld told The Canadian Press that, to its knowledge, operations at the facility a U.S. Department of Homeland Security report identified as non-compliant “were not performed by GardaWorld Federal.” GardaWorld, ICE declined to comment to CP on the new contracts.
