Talking point: This is the FTC’s second recent complaint accusing Facebook of being a social-media monopoly. In late June, a New York judge dismissed two similar suits—one brought by the regulator and another by more than 40 states—but gave the complainants 30 days to refile with more evidence showing Facebook has a market share of at least 60 per cent. The saga is the first major Big-Tech challenge for the FTC’s Lina Khan. Rather than drop the case or broaden it, the agency’s new chair has opted to stay focused on the original claims, but to make them in greater detail (the new filing is twice as long as the original). Facebook has pressured Khan to recuse herself from the case, claiming bias from her past work on platform monopolies.
