Talking point: This is the first concrete indication of how FreshBooks is using the money it raised from JPMorgan Chase in August. At the time, the company described the influx as the “most significant” investment in its history. The international push comes as one of its largest competitors, Wave, is doing the same—the firm’s CEO Kirk Simpson told The Logic earlier this month that it’s trying to capitalize on the scale of H&R Block, which acquired it in July for $537 million. FreshBooks is just the latest Canadian tech firm to choose Amsterdam as an early city to serve as a launching pad for a broader entry into the European market. In 2015, Montreal-based Lightspeed bought SEOshop, an Amsterdam-based e-commerce company, and is now expanding across the continent. In April, Toronto-based Rangle announced it was opening an office in the city.
