Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland followed up her stunning resignation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet with a campaign of phone calls to her fellow Liberal MPs. Freeland didn’t specifically mention the Liberal leadership, according to the Toronto Star, but at least one MP who spoke to the paper on the condition of anonymity says they believe the calls are connected to a potential leadership run. Talking Point: Freeland’s surprise resignation in December set off the greatest challenge to Trudeau’s leadership yet. Senior ministers said Trudeau would take the holidays to reflect on his political future. In the meantime, members of the Atlantic, Ontario and Quebec Liberal caucuses have expressed their desire for the prime minister to step down. Senior Liberal MPs are expected to meet Friday afternoon to discuss what next steps the caucus should take. Trudeau returned to work Friday, but has yet to make any public statements.
