The Canadian and French space agencies will work together on launch, control and reception capabilities, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced after meeting France’s President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday. The key launch site for European Space Agency rockets is in French Guiana, which is French territory in South America; the agreement raises the possibility of supplementing that site with one in Atlantic Canada. Talking point: At the meeting in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French archipelago off the coast of Newfoundland, Macron emphasized that France and Canada are literal neighbours, not just friendly. As Canada and Europe pursue closer ties, the two leaders talked about improving co-operation between Canada and the French islands, in trade, energy, climate resilience and security. The countries have argued over fishing rights in the area, with startling consequences.
