The Detroit automaker and the union’s bargaining committee reached a tentative deal for a new three-year agreement on Saturday. Unifor’s 5,150 members at Ford will vote at the end of this week on whether they will ratify the yet-undisclosed details of the deal, which historically included wage increases and factory upgrades to build new vehicles. Talking point: The agreement will be key for securing the future of Ford’s Oakville complex, setting the tone for tough talks ahead with Stellantis and General Motors. The Oakville factory faced years of uncertainty after Ford shelved plans to make electric vehicles there in 2024 in favour of trucks. The Logic reported in May that Ford’s new plan got $464 million in federal government backing. Still, the car business is challenging, with new competition from China-based automakers and tariff talks with the U.S. and Mexico. The Ford-Unifor agreement will likely be closely read by workers at General Motors’ CAMI plant and Stellantis’s Brampton factory, where automakers have cancelled or postponed Canadian production plans.
