The Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation and the Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation say Bell hasn’t consulted with them on a major development affecting their traditional territory. The AI-oriented data centre is being built south of Regina, in co-operation with the province and George Gordon First Nation, but Standing Buffalo’s Chief Rodger Redman told the CBC that an agreement with one First Nation doesn’t cover a proponent’s responsibilities to others. Bell said it’s committed to engaging with communities and First Nations. (CBC News)
Talking point: Bell is already planning an expansion at the 300-megawatt Sherwood site; it signed a deal with the province of Saskatchewan on data centres in September, on the eve of the Canada Investment Summit, and CEO Mirko Bibic said Sherwood was the likeliest place for expansions totalling 900 megawatts. The project has met with protests amid a wider backlash against data-centre projects in general.
