The provincial government will put up $51 million to upgrade the rail line connecting the Hudson Bay port to southern Canadian producers and to build a storage facility for critical minerals, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Wab Kinew announced. The federal government will also pay for a study on deploying icebreakers and other ships at the port, in addition to a previously announced pledge of $175 million for the railway. (The Logic)

Talking point: Churchill’s Indigenous-owned port and railway company has been pitching itself as a cargo gateway to European markets. Carney has touted a Churchill expansion already and in September, he listed it in a second tier of ideas—what he’s calling “transformative strategies”—the government wants to push forward but that aren’t yet fully fledged proposals like the first-tier referrals to the new Major Projects Office.
