In an application to the Federal Court, the Attorney General of Canada is requesting an order to force Toronto-based Gator Capital to sell its $34-million stake in a Calgary lithium company. The miner, Lithium Chile, was the target of a previous government order in 2022 forcing a Chinese investor, Chengze Lithium International, to divest its stake in the company on national security grounds. Talking point: The government claims Gator’s owner, Wing Hong Chan, “has repeatedly and deliberately failed to provide information” about its investment in Lithium Chile, and said Gator has no physical presence in Canada outside of a rented mailbox. Ottawa has sought to clamp down on Chinese investment in Canadian critical minerals firms to limit Beijing’s market dominance, but those efforts have also caused confusion among investors given that the government has targeted companies (including Lithium Chile) whose mining assets exist entirely outside of Canada’s borders.
