The court ordered Industry Minister Mélanie Joly to take another look at the video app’s Canadian operations. (Politico)
Talking point: In 2024, then-innovation minister François-Philippe Champagne ordered TikTok to “wind up” its Canadian business operations based on a national security review. Canada and other governments have expressed concerns that TikTok’s parent company, Beijing-based ByteDance, could provide sensitive personal information to China’s government. The order, which was challenged in court, didn’t ban use of the app in Canada but would have required the company to close its Canadian offices. A spokesperson for TikTok Canada told Politico that it welcomes the court’s decision, and that keeping the company’s Canadian team in place will support millions of dollars of investment in Canada and hundreds of local jobs. The Innovation Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
