Talking point: Clear Fork is the latest example of major energy companies rushing to power AI data centres. The Instagram and Facebook owner has already inked agreements with solar, geothermal and nuclear companies, including 1,800 megawatts worth of deals with Chicago-based solar firm Invenergy. While wind and solar alone cannot power data centres because they don’t provide a constant supply of electricity, they can be paired with other sources to reduce emissions. Data centre hype has kicked off a renewable energy boom in Texas, where, as of May, companies had announced plans to build US$64 billion in new capacity.
