The parent company of grocery chain Sobeys said in a statement Wednesday that its Voilà e-commerce offering in the province, which it launched in June 2023 through a partnership with the U.K.-based Ocado Group, did not meet its financial expectations. (The Logic)
Talking point: Sobeys partnered with Ocado in 2018, planning to build four automated fulfilment centres across Canada—one each in Vaughan, Ont., Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver—as the country’s grocers raced to meet growing demand for online shopping and delivery. Amid a pandemic-driven boost, Sobeys accelerated plans for its last two centres, including the Alberta one. But by 2024, it hit pause on opening one in Vancouver, explaining the centres take time to become profitable, and ended its exclusivity agreement with Ocado. Empire said that it will begin offering delivery in the coming months through a new partnership with DoorDash.
