The Ottawa-based defence company is working on a bid to take over unused automotive manufacturing plants in Canada. If it pursued a deal, it could buy or lease Stellantis’s Brampton, Ont., plant with a coalition of other defence companies, hiring 1,000 Stellantis workers, CEO Eliot Pence told The Globe and Mail. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Unifor National President Lana Payne said last week that Stellantis was considering selling the plant to a single, unknown bidder. She suspected it was not an automaker, which she warned would make it hard to retain the plant’s current workforce. On Wednesday, Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin reiterated a previous statement—that it was prioritizing union negotiations—and did not provide further comment on Dominion’s bid. Another defence firm, Roshel, is also formulating a bid for unused auto factory space to build armoured vehicles, the Globe reported. It’s not clear how far along Dominion and Roshel are in putting together their prospective bids, or whether a deal will materialize. At last week’s press conference, Payne said she had not been in talks with Roshel. Dominion and Roshel did not immediately respond to The Logic’s requests for comment.
