Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden said he is “already talking” with caucus colleagues about legislation to roll back duties that U.S. President Donald Trump slapped on Canadian goods once Democrats take control of the Senate Finance Committee. “There is overwhelming support for repealing the tariffs on products from Canada,” said Wyden, who is currently the ranking committee member. Talking point: The rising cost of living made the trade war a major ballot-box issue in several midterm congressional races. Even the Republican Senate candidate in Michigan, who lost, had criticized the tariffs in a campaign spot that showed him raising a bottle of Labatt Blue. Any attempt to repeal the tariffs, or the executive authorities that Trump used to justify them, would need a two-thirds supermajority in the House of Representatives (290 votes) and the Senate (67 votes) to overrule a presidential veto. The Democrats, who do not all oppose using tariffs for national security reasons, fell short of that threshold.
