Empire had first called the incident an “information technology systems issue,” but CBC, quoting employees, reported that it was a ransomware attack. Empire said Thursday in its second-quarter earnings release that its security teams worked with leading cyber-defense teams, and the company continues to bring information and administrative systems back online in phases. Its net earnings for the quarter totalled nearly $190 million, up from roughly $175 million in the same time last year. The company saw double-digit growth for its Voilà grocery-delivery service, while same-store sales not including fuel grew 3.1 per cent. Empire also announced it is selling its 56 Western Canada fuel sites to a Shell Canada subsidiary for about $100 million.
