The platform, founded by the Winklevoss twins, has emailed Canadian customers to inform them they must remove their assets before Dec. 31, when it will close their accounts, according to a report from Cointelegraph and posts on Reddit. (The Logic, Cointelegraph)
Talking point: New York City-based Gemini is the latest international crypto platform to exit Canada since securities regulators started cracking down on the sector in 2021. Binance, whose Chinese-born Canadian founder Changpeng Zhao was released from a California correctional facility Friday after pleading guilty to failing to implement an adequate anti-money-laundering program, exited Canada in May 2023. International crypto-trading giants Kraken and Coinbase, on the other hand, have opted to invest in Canada and push for friendly regulations. Last week, Canadian securities regulators extended the deadline for platforms to either register to offer stablecoins or stop listing them to Dec. 31. Gemini did not immediately respond to The Logic’s request for comment.
