Talking point: The Corel name lives on in CorelDraw, one in a family of products that includes WinZip, WordPerfect and PaintShopPro. Once Canada’s answer to Microsoft under flamboyant founder Michael Cowpland, Corel was taken private by private-equity firm Vector Capital in 2003 and reportedly sold to KKR for over US$1 billion in 2019. Although Alludo’s head office remains in the copper-tinted building in Ottawa that once bore Corel’s logo, its CEO Christa Quarles is based in California and other C-suite executives live in New York and Washington state.
