Party leader Pierre Poilievre said federal Conservatives will be making motions in Parliament and launching petitions against the federal rule penalizing automakers if 20 per cent of their new vehicle sales are not emissions-free by 2026. (The Logic)
Talking point: Automakers have long opposed the December 2022 policy, which requires them to either bank or buy credits from compliant manufacturers like Tesla, invest in fast-charging infrastructure, or pay fines if they fall short of sales targets. EV mandate supporters say jurisdictions like Quebec, B.C. and the U.K. have used them successfully. Globally, zero-emissions vehicles represent about 22 per cent of new vehicle sales, and made up about 18.3 per cent of Canadian sales in 2024’s fourth quarter. But that number slipped to about 8.7 per cent in the first quarter as federal purchase incentive programs ran out of cash.
