Talking point: China had already implemented the bans in 2013 and 2017, but the statement is the latest example of governments grappling with how to oversee the increasingly popular, valuable and difficult-to-regulate industry. In India, banks are reportedly halting transfers to cryptocurrency exchanges, after the country’s central bank informally encouraged them to do so. In the U.S., the sector is dissecting comments from new U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chair Gary Gensler, who has suggested more regulation might be coming. And in Canada, securities regulators are working to bring exchanges into compliance with their view on how they should be registered.
